How To Organise Your Clothes and Save Drawer Space

Folding clothes properly saves you time on ironing, and helps you make the most of precious storage space. We’ve put together some easy and fun-to-do ways you can fold your clothes and save space with our beautiful collection of dressers and drawers – keep reading and get busy saving!

Start with a Classic Spring Clean and Organise Your Clothes into Categories
The best way to start is with a bit of spring cleaning. Empty each drawer and set aside those old items you want to sell or donate. Once you have your pile of clothes to keep, organise them by the type of clothing: tops, jeans, jerseys, and so on.

If you have a lot of clothes and limited space, separate your winter and summer clothes, storing the off-season clothes elsewhere and alternating clothes as the seasons change.

Assign Drawer Space for each Category
You want to keep small, loose items like socks and vests in the top drawer. For a more organised top drawer, use small baskets that can fit in the drawer to separate the different items. Your second and third rows of drawers are for clothes you regularly wear, like t-shirts and pants. Use the bottom drawers for bulkier items like knitted jerseys and jackets.

It can become a habit to clutter your dresser with miscellaneous things like cosmetics and jewellery for easy access. If so, adding the spacious and stylish Tristan Pedestal is what you need!

For the lucky few who don’t have a lot of clothes and have an extra drawer – don’t let it go to waste! Use this space to store linen, extra toiletries, handbags, or anything else you want to keep in the bedroom.

Finding the Right Drawer or Dresser That Suits Your Space
A chest of drawers like the Nimbus Tallboy or the Jasmine Chest of Drawers is ideal for smaller rooms that need efficient and practical storage. For bigger rooms, you can start your daily routine with the modern and slick Porto Dressing Table & Mirror.

Folding Techniques for Different Items of Clothing
Check out these simple, popular techniques to fold different types of clothing for easy access and maximising drawer space.

Shirts

This method stacks t-shirts to stand upright, which gives you a better view of your collection:

  1. Lay your shirt flat with the bottom hem closer to you and take one side of the shirt, fold it towards the centre, and then fold the sleeve outward.
  2. Fold the shirt in half lengthwise and in half again.
  3. Pack your shirts alongside one another in the drawer.
For dress shirts, even though hanging them is recommended, the steps are very similar:
  1. Lay your shirt flat with the bottom hem closer to you and take one side of the shirt, fold it towards the centre, and then fold the sleeve outward.
  2. Halfway down the sleeve, fold it inwards. Repeat with the other side.
  3. Fold the shirt in half lengthways without crushing the collar.
  4. Pack your dress shirts alongside one another in the drawer.
Sweaters & Jackets

In contrast to dress shirts, sweaters tend to weigh a bit and can stretch when hung on a hanger, so it is better to store them in drawers.

  1. Lay your sweater flat with the bottom hem closer to you, and take one side of the sleeve, fold it towards the opposite shoulder so that it is parallel to the bottom hem. Repeat with the other side.
  2. Fold one side slightly towards the centre and repeat with the other side.
  3. Fold in half
  4. Pack your sweaters alongside one another in the drawer.
Jeans

Jeans can be very bulky when not stored correctly. This method allows you to maximise the drawer space:

  1. Lay the pair of pants out and fold it in half lengthways, with the back pockets on the outside.
  2. Fold the pants by bringing the hem towards the waistline and fold again.
  3. Pack your pants alongside one another in the drawer.
